Lieux-dit are little placenames in France, for a farm or field. Les Courtes, La Botte D’Asperges, La Belle Vue, Le Télégraphe… They’re hyper-local placenames, known only to nearby residents. They do show up on road signs though, and occasionally wine labels, and they are lovely and historically evocative.
And of course they exist in Shapefile databases. Here’s some from Nantes. Sorry for the lack of basemap; I tried adding some public raster tile source to QGIS 2 but got defeated.
